Our mission
Turn every dive into data for the ocean.
DiveSight Institute is a citizen-science and conservation initiative built on a simple idea: the people already in the water are the ocean's best observers.
The idea
Knowledge that usually surfaces and disappears.
Every year, millions of dives produce first-hand knowledge of what lives where and how conditions are shifting — and almost all of it evaporates the moment divers climb back on the boat. We exist to capture it.
DiveSight Institute is the conservation and citizen-science initiative of the DiveSight project. Where the DiveSight app helps people find good diving, the Institute focuses on what those dives can give back: a growing record of marine life, surveys built to answer real conservation questions, and pathways for everyday divers to contribute to marine science.
We work hand in hand with conservation groups, researchers and marine managers — designing the surveys that gather the data they need, then bringing the reach of the diving community to collect it. The goal is simple: make sure the effort divers put in actually reaches the people who protect the ocean.
What guides us
How we work.
Divers as scientists
We meet divers where they are. A first-timer and a seasoned surveyor can both contribute — as long as every observation is recorded honestly and weighted for what it is.
Expertise, given freely
Our in-house PhD data scientists and survey experts work with conservation groups at no charge. Rigorous analysis shouldn't be a luxury only large institutions can afford.
Partner, don't duplicate
Where trusted programs already exist — REEF, iNaturalist, university surveys — we feed them rather than build a competing silo. Our value is reach and rigor, not ownership.
Evidence over anecdote
A feeling about a reef is a starting point; a defensible time series is what moves policy. We turn scattered observations into records that can be checked and compared.
Impact over collection
We don't gather data for its own sake. Every survey and tool is aimed at a real decision — a protected area, a management plan, a policy.
Join the effort
Your next dive can be data for the ocean.
Log what you see and help build a living record of ocean life that informs real conservation — one dive at a time.
