What we do
From a single sighting to a shared record.
Diver-powered citizen science, backed by in-house data scientists and survey experts — all in service of the people protecting the ocean.
Our work
Expertise and tools in service of the ocean.
DiveSight Institute pairs a global diving community with in-house data-science and survey expertise, and puts both to work for the organizations protecting the ocean.
Tools for citizen scientists
Simple, intuitive tools that let any diver turn what they see underwater into structured, usable citizen-science records — no training needed to start contributing.
Free data-science consulting
Our in-house PhD statisticians and data scientists work with conservation organizations at no cost — designing analyses, making sense of messy datasets, and strengthening the evidence behind their decisions.
Survey science, in the field
As practicing survey scientists, we help organizations design and run the surveys that answer their questions — and co-lead field surveys ourselves, in partnership with other groups.
Access to ocean & climate data
We build custom tools and pipelines that give conservation groups and academic researchers workable access to the vast, intimidating oceanographic and climatological datasets that could advance their research.
Making data count
We work alongside conservation and research partners to make sure the data they gather reaches the decisions, policies, and audiences where it can have the most impact.
Citizen science & the Sealife List
Observation, made effortless.
Logging a dive in the DiveSight app already captures what a diver saw. The Institute treats those observations as citizen-science data: structured, timestamped, and tied to a specific place.
Following the tiered-confidence model pioneered by platforms like iNaturalist, unverified sightings are kept clearly separate from confirmed ones — useful as a recruitment and training signal without ever being mistaken for vetted survey data.
Surveys built for a purpose
Designed with the people who set policy.
A dive survey is only useful if it measures the right things. We work directly with conservation groups, researchers and marine managers to co-design surveys — deciding together which species, habitats and conditions to record so the results can actually inform protection decisions and policy.
Then we do what a diver community does best: put those surveys in front of the people already in the water, at the sites that matter, turning scattered dives into focused, comparable data.
Official partnership
A REEF Conservation Partner.
DiveSight Institute is a proud Conservation Partner of the Reef Environmental Education Foundation (REEF) — the citizen-science organization behind the Volunteer Fish Survey Project, one of the largest marine-life databases in the world.
Our role is to feed REEF’s proven method, not compete with it. We point divers to REEF’s free membership and survey training, and we’re aligning DiveSight’s marine-life logging with REEF’s standards — so the sightings our community records can strengthen the record REEF has built over decades.
Join the effort
Your next dive can be data for the ocean.
Log what you see and help build a living record of ocean life that informs real conservation — one dive at a time.
